The earlier format of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering included many dedicated subjects like Aircraft Structures, Aerodynamics, Basic Electricity, Basic Electronics, Maintenance Practices, Aviation Legislation, Basic Electronics, Basic Instruments, Basic Engine, Aircraft Hardware, Materials and Metallurgy for the beginners and depending on the stream chosen by the candidate, the advance syllabus included, Heavy Aircraft Structures and Systems, Light Aircraft Structures and Systems, Rotary Aircraft Structures and Systems, Jet Engine Systems and Maintenance, and Piston Engine Systems and Maintenance for the mechanical aspirant where as Instruments Systems, Electrical Systems, and Radio Navigation Systems, were the major subjects for the avionic aspirants. But with the new Module systems inducted by the DGCA, the beginners need to study eight subjects namely Module 03-Electrical fundamentals, Module 04-Electronics Fundamentals , Module 05 Digital Techniques Electronic Instruments Systems, Module 06 Materials and Hardware, Module 07-Maintenance Practices, Module 08-Basic Aerodynamics, Module 09-Human Factors, Module 10-Aviation Legislation irrespective of their streams. Although the level of examination of some of the subjects are different for both streams. Depending on the stream choice, the mechanical aspirant needs to study Module 11 A-Turbine Aero plane Aerodynamics, Structures and Systems, Module 11 B-Piston Aero plane Aerodynamics, Structures and Systems, Module 12-Helicopter Aerodynamics, Structures and Systems, Module 15-Gas Turbine Engine, Module 16-Piston Engine, and Module 17-Propellers. Candidate can choose from modules 11A, 11B and 12. Similarly, a choice can be made between modules 15 & 16. Although, the institution may ask the candidates to take any number of modules irrespective of the streams they complete. For the avionic aspirants, advance subjects are Module 13-Aircraft Aerodynamics, Structures and Systems, Module 14-Propulsion.
Here, one thing to be taken note of is that the mechanical stream has as many as five subcategories and therefore the applicability of certain modules and also the level of knowledge are different for different subcategories.
